About this journal
Aims and scope
Museum Management and Curatorship (MMC) is a peer-reviewed, international journal for museum professionals, scholars, students, educators and consultants that examines current issues in depth, and provides up-to-date research, analysis and commentary on developments in museum practice. It is published five times a year and all submitted manuscripts will undergo double anonymized review. The journal encourages a continuous reassessment of collections management, administration, archives, communications, conservation, diversity, ethics, globalization, governance, interpretation, leadership, management, purpose/mission, public service, new technology and social responsibility.
MMC is committed to an intelligent balance between theory and practice and is relevant to both academics and museum practitioners. It provides an authoritative forum for challenging and debating theories, models and practices that have significant implications for museology throughout the world, while also striving to be as multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary as possible.
A leading journal in the museum field for nearly thirty years, MMC is edited by Dr. James M. Bradburne, museum consultant and former Director General of Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, Italy.
Peer Review Statement
Museum Management and Curatorship
is an international peer-reviewed journal which publishes original research contributions to scientific knowledge.
All manuscript submissions are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees.
All peer review is double anonymized and submission guidelines can be found here.
“Museum Management and Curatorship is a contribution of incalculable value to the field. Scholarly and sophisticated, the journal appeals to working professionals and is also attractive to those beginning a career and those associated with museums as volunteers, patrons, and supporters. Its articles are timely and well-informed, and MMC’s long-held reputation for excellence is renewed with every issue.”
Robert R. Archibald, President, Missouri History Museum, USA
“ Can I say that the peer review process has really stimulated me - it is just unfair that I do not have you and the reviewers to discuss things with on a regular basis. As you can imagine, having been fired-up by the reviewers, I have continued to build from the article and eventually I hope it will head towards a book.”
Mr Graham Black, Nottingham Trent University, UK
“ It is very good to hear the MMC is moving to five issues a year. It is one of the best and most widely read in the field.”
Dr Fiona Cameron, University of Western Sydney, Australia
“ It would be an honor for me to serve as a reviewer for Museum Management and Curatorship. It is a very important journal.”
Finn Frandsen, Aarhus University, Denmark
“ I am very grateful to you for your invitation to become a referee for such a prestigious and well-known journal.”
Tamara Yureneva, Russian Institute for Cultural Research, Russia “ We have really enjoyed the process of working with MMC editors and reviewers. We will check over the proofs when they arrive, but I expect they will be grand!”
Cara Krmpotich, University of Toronto, Canada
“ I would like to thank you for spending time to deal with my submission. Your papers also inspire me about museums and their social relevance. MMC is fortunate enough to have you as Editor-in-Chief."
Hsu HUANG, National Museum of Natural Science, Taiwan " I really appreciated the precise, helpful and expeditious review process with your journal, for our article "A museum for the twenty-first century" . We'd like to submit another article for the consideration of your journal"
Martin Tröndle, Zeppelin University, Germany

Understanding and using journal metrics
Journal metrics can be a useful tool for readers, as well as for authors who are deciding where to submit their next manuscript for publication. However, any one metric only tells a part of the story of a journal’s quality and impact. Each metric has its limitations which means that it should never be considered in isolation, and metrics should be used to support and not replace qualitative review.
We strongly recommend that you always use a number of metrics, alongside other qualitative factors such as a journal’s aims & scope, its readership, and a review of past content published in the journal. In addition, a single article should always be assessed on its own merits and never based on the metrics of the journal it was published in.
For more details, please read the Author Services guide to understanding journal metrics.
Journal metrics in brief
Usage and acceptance rate data above are for the last full calendar year and are updated annually in February. Speed data is updated every six months, based on the prior six months. Citation metrics are updated annually mid-year. Please note that some journals do not display all of the following metrics (find out why).
- Usage: the total number of times articles in the journal were viewed by users of Taylor & Francis Online in the previous calendar year, rounded to the nearest thousand.
Citation Metrics
- Impact Factor*: the average number of citations received by articles published in the journal within a two-year window. Only journals in the Clarivate Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) have an Impact Factor.
- Impact Factor Best Quartile*: the journal’s highest subject category ranking in the Journal Citation Reports. Q1 = 25% of journals with the highest Impact Factors.
- 5 Year Impact Factor*: the average number of citations received by articles in the journal within a five-year window.
- CiteScore (Scopus)†: the average number of citations received by articles in the journal over a four-year period.
- CiteScore Best Quartile†: the journal’s highest CiteScore ranking in a Scopus subject category. Q1 = 25% of journals with the highest CiteScores.
- SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper): the number of citations per paper in the journal, divided by citation potential in the field.
- SJR (Scimago Journal Rank): Average number of (weighted) citations in one year, divided by the number of articles published in the journal in the previous three years.
Speed/acceptance
- From submission to first decision: the average (median) number of days for a manuscript submitted to the journal to receive a first decision. Based on manuscripts receiving a first decision in the last six months.
- From submission to first post-review decision: the average (median) number of days for a manuscript submitted to the journal to receive a first decision if it is sent out for peer review. Based on manuscripts receiving a post-review first decision in the last six months.
- From acceptance to online publication: the average (median) number of days from acceptance of a manuscript to online publication of the Version of Record. Based on articles published in the last six months.
- Acceptance rate: articles accepted for publication by the journal in the previous calendar year as percentage of all papers receiving a final decision.
