Aims and scope
About the Journal
The Asia Pacific Journal of Social Work and Development (APJSWD) is published four times a year by the Department of Social Work of the National University of Singapore, in collaboration with the Asian and Pacific Association for Social Work Education. It is an international journal published, seeking to elaborate and disseminate original ideas, innovative practice methods, rigorous analyses of empirical research, and knowledge and skills of problem solving in social work and development, either nationally or internationally, in the Asia-Pacific region.
Aims and Scope
The journal aims to develop and disseminate social work literature that provides linkages among social research, social work education, social work policy and practice, and social development at the national and international levels, in the Asia-Pacific region. It contributes to understanding key social problems and trends in the Asia-Pacific context, as well as to providing forums of effective strategies responding to these emerging challenges.
The journal invites various types of original contributions related to the Asia-Pacific region, including empirical research, theoretical and historical analyses, and critical reviews of policies, programs, legislations, organizations, and practice interventions.
The subject areas of the journal cover the following in the Asia-Pacific region:
- Ideologies, values and ethics of social work
- Approaches, methods, techniques and skills of social work
- Social development and social welfare
- Administration of voluntary/non-profit organizations
- Social work within societal governance systems
- Social service sectors and social work intervention
- Social work for marginalized groups
- Social work in social conflict and emergency situations
- Pedagogical research

Peer Review Process
All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by an Editor, and, if found within the scope for further consideration, to peer review by usually two independent, anonymous expert referees. Submission for articles is online via ScholarOne Manuscripts and all peer reviews are double anonymized.

Understanding and using journal metrics
Journal metrics can be a useful tool for readers, as well as for authors who are deciding where to submit their next manuscript for publication. However, any one metric only tells a part of the story of a journal’s quality and impact. Each metric has its limitations which means that it should never be considered in isolation, and metrics should be used to support and not replace qualitative review.
We strongly recommend that you always use a number of metrics, alongside other qualitative factors such as a journal’s aims & scope, its readership, and a review of past content published in the journal. In addition, a single article should always be assessed on its own merits and never based on the metrics of the journal it was published in.

Journal metrics in brief
Usage and acceptance rate data above are for the last full calendar year and are updated annually in February. Speed data is updated every six months, based on the prior six months. Citation metrics are updated annually mid-year. Please note that some journals do not display all of the following metrics (find out why).
- Usage: the total number of times articles in the journal were viewed by users of Taylor & Francis Online in the previous calendar year, rounded to the nearest thousand.
Citation Metrics
- Impact Factor*: the average number of citations received by articles published in the journal within a two-year window. Only journals in the Clarivate Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE), Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI) and the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) have an Impact Factor.
- Impact Factor Best Quartile*: the journal’s highest subject category ranking in the Journal Citation Reports. Q1 = 25% of journals with the highest Impact Factors.
- 5 Year Impact Factor*: the average number of citations received by articles in the journal within a five-year window.
- CiteScore (Scopus)†: the average number of citations received by articles in the journal over a four-year period.
- CiteScore Best Quartile†: the journal’s highest CiteScore ranking in a Scopus subject category. Q1 = 25% of journals with the highest CiteScores.
- SNIP (Source Normalized Impact per Paper): the number of citations per paper in the journal, divided by citation potential in the field.
- SJR (Scimago Journal Rank): Average number of (weighted) citations in one year, divided by the number of articles published in the journal in the previous three years.
Speed/acceptance
- From submission to first decision: the average (median) number of days for a manuscript submitted to the journal to receive a first decision. Based on manuscripts receiving a first decision in the last six months.
- From submission to first post-review decision: the average (median) number of days for a manuscript submitted to the journal to receive a first decision if it is sent out for peer review. Based on manuscripts receiving a post-review first decision in the last six months.
- From acceptance to online publication: the average (median) number of days from acceptance of a manuscript to online publication of the Version of Record. Based on articles published in the last six months.
- Acceptance rate: articles accepted for publication by the journal in the previous calendar year as percentage of all papers receiving a final decision.

Society information
Department of Social Work, National University of Singapore (NUS)
The Department of Social Work, NUS, has been the main provider of Social Work Education in Singapore since 1952. It offers undergraduate, graduate diploma, masters and doctoral programmes, and is also active in research and practice in the community.
Research in the Department is integrated with our practice and teaching of social work. Many of our research projects are collaborations with local community partners and international researchers. The projects analyze trends on issues of societal concern, and evaluate policies, programs and services for populations in need. Research also provides hands-on learning to students who are engaged in the projects.
Vision
To be a leading educational and research institution within the international social work community, providing a distinctive Asian perspective in social work and social development.
Mission
1. To produce and develop competent social work graduates who can contribute to the well-being of society by
- promoting the social functioning of people within the environment from the perspectives of the individual, family and community;
- enabling the development of human potential to the fullest;
- providing effective social work leadership; and
- undertaking research and creating awareness and understanding of social issues and social change.
2. To lead in the development and promotion of regional social work education, practice and research in collaboration with Asian and other international partners.

Asian and Pacific Association for Social Work Education (APASWE)
The APASWE is a non-profit and non-sectarian organization for schools of social work in the Asia-Pacific region. With a membership exceeding 200 (mostly drawn from educational institutions), APASWE promotes academic and professional standards of social work education and facilitates inter-school cooperation and collaboration in the region.
