About this journal

Aims and scope

IJFE’s scope includes forest engineering operations topics related to the management, harvesting, processing and transport of timber and/or biomass products to industry or other users. Our scope applies to all kinds of forest management and restoration (e.g. short and long rotation; uneven-aged and even-aged; agroforestry) associated with sustainable management, production and transport of timber and biomass products. Our scope normally excludes industrial manufacturing processes (e.g. sawmilling, pulp and paper manufacturing, conversion of biomass into biofuels), materials strength testing, etc. which occur following transport to industry.

Examples of topics typically covered by the IJFE are:
  • technology and work methods for stand establishment, tending and protection
  • wood procurement and wood supply system analysis
  • forest access and operations planning, management and control
  • application of information and other technologies to forest engineering operations
  • timber and biomass harvesting, processing and transportation
  • impacts of forest operations and mitigation practices
  • machine design, management and evaluation
  • human factors engineering
  • education, training and management of forest engineering personnel

If there are uncertainties about whether a manuscript might fall within the IJFE’s scope, please contact the Editor. For manuscripts related to the industrial manufacturing processes, bioenergy production, materials strength testing, etc. we recommend authors consider publishing in the Forest Products Journal.

All submitted manuscripts are subject to initial appraisal by the Editor, and, if found suitable for further consideration, to peer review by independent, anonymous expert referees. All peer review is double anonymized and submission is online via Editorial Manager.
