Abstract
Four distinct aspects of the acquisitions librarian’s job can be identified: bibliographic aspects, automation aspects, collection development aspects, and business aspects. Each acquisitions librarian must somehow successfully combine all of these roles, despite the fact that excellence in the context of one role may be mediocrity or worse in the context of another role. Choices about which roles to emphasize should be based on the needs of the library, rather than personal preferences of the individual, but the business manager’s role is essential to any library. Acquisitions librarians should promote their ability to serve as the connection between groups with disparate interests.
