Avian Paramyxoviruses—Other than Newcastle disease virus

Summary

Newcastle disease, possibly the most economically important disease of domestic poultry throughout the world, is caused by a paramyxovirus (NDV). In recent years numerous isolations of other paramyxoviruses serologically distinct from NDV have been made from domestic poultry, imported exotic birds and feral passerines, psittacines and waterfowl in many countries. At present there are seven recognised serotypes of avian paramyxoviruses—PMV-1 to PMV-7 (NDV being PMV-1), although several candidates for further serotypes await full evaluation. Avian paramyxoviruses, other than NDV, may be responsible for highly pathogenic disease in some avian species, but in experimental or uncomplicated field infections of domestic poultry they have tended to produce inapparent infection, relatively mild respiratory disease and/or egg production problems. However, there are reports of severe respiratory disease with high mortality in domestic poultry infected with avian paramyxoviruses in the presence of other exacerbative organisms.

La maladie de Newscastle, peut-être économiquement la plus importante maladie des volailles à travers le monde, est causée par un paramyxovirus (NDV).

Au cours des années récentes, de nombreux isolements de paramyxovirus distincts sérologiquement du NDV ont été faits à partir des volailles domestiques, d'oiseaux domestiques importés et de passereaux, psittacidés et espices aquantiques (waterfowl) indigènes dans de nombreux pays. A l'heure actuelle, il y a sept sérotypes reconnus de paramyxovirus aviaries—PMV-1 à PMV-7 (NDV étant PMV-1) quoique plusieurs candidatures à de futurs sérotypes soient en attente. Les paramyxovirus aviaires autres que le NDV pourraient être responsables de maladies très pathogènes dans certaines espèces aviaires, mais dans les infections expérimentales ou apparaissant sur le terrain sans complications, chez les volailles domestiques, ils tendent à produire des maladies peu apparentes, respiratoires relativement bénignes et/ou affectant la ponte. Cependant, on a rapporté des maladies respiratoires sévéres avec mortalité élevée chez des volailles infectées par des paramyxovirus aviaires exacerbés par d'autres organismes.

Zusammenfassung

Die Newcastle-Krankheit, möglicherweise die wirtschaftlich bedeutenste Krankheit unseres Hausgeflügels in der Walt, wird durch ein Paramyxovirus (NDV) verursacht. In den vergangenen Jahren sind in vielen Ländern zahlreiche Paramyxoviren aus Hausgeflügel, wichtigen exotischen Vogelarten, Sittichen und Wassergeflügel isoliert worden, die sich serologisch von NDV unterscheiden. Gegenwärtig sind 7 Serotypen von Paramyxoviren des Geflügels bekannt und es ist zu erwarten, daß weitere hinzukommen. Paramyxoviren des Geflügels, die nicht ND-Viren sind, können für sehr ansteckende Krankheiten in einigen Geflügelarten verantwortlich sein, aber in Versuchen oder in eingachen Feldinfektionen von Hausgefluügel zeigten sie nur undeutliche Krankheitserscheinungen, verhältnismäßig milde Atmungserkrankungen und/oder Probleme bei der Legeleistung. Es gibt allerdings einige Berichte, daß eine schwere Atmungserkrangung und hohe Sterblichkeit beim Hausgeflügel erzeugt wurde, wenn mit Paramyxoviren bei Anwesenheit anderer krankmachender Organismen infiziert wurde.
