This paper makes a synthesis of sedimentation in EDF's french reservoirs and its management by flushing sediment during floods. The case of alpine reservoirs with high sedimentation shows the effectiveness of flushing as well as the respect of environmental criteria. The different options of flushing sediment, in particular the shape of the flood and the period of the year, are discussed with their impacts on physicochemistry and biology, in spite of the difficulty in separating the effect of flushing sediment from that of the flood.
