Pages 56-60 | Published online: 01 Jul 2009

A better understanding of roman hydraulic systems in southern Gaul benefits from the combination of the three factors : the application of new concepts in fluvial geomorphology, the use of geoarchaeological methods and, landscape archaeology. The results of this work confirm the importance of Roman control of hydrological systems on the Rhône plains ; the principal aspects of this are described. At the sarne time, this information is put into perspective and contextualized within a natural history of fluvial risk and the vulnerability of river-based societies.
