This paper deals with the optimization of the extension and reinforcement of the network of Kairouan. The equations translating the hydraulic behavior of the network are non-lïnear and the decision variables, such as the diameters, have to be chosen from what is commercially available. Therefore, the optimization model is a non-linear mixed integer model. To find the least-cost solution of the problem stated, a simulated annealing algorithm has been used. These algorithms have shown their ability to cope with the mathematical characteristics described above, and the efficiency of the model has been conspicuous when solving different civil engineering optimization problems.
