An Application of Decision Conferencing at Welwyn Hatfield District Council

Abstract

Decision Conferencing is a methodology which aims to improve the efficiency and outcomes of meetings which are called to address strategic issues. This article describes one particular Decision Conference involving elected members and officers of Welwyn Hatfield District Council, at a point in time when fundamental changes were required concerning financial and service level strategies for a four-year period.

Chris Marples is Lecturer at Loughborough University Business School, Loughborough, U.K. His recent industrial experience covers Decision Support, Office Support and Executive Information Systems. His current research interests include strategic use of group decision support systems.

David Riddle

David Riddle is Chief Executive of Welwyn Hatfield District Council. He is a solicitor who has worked for most of his career in local governement. He was deputy Chief Executive at the London Borough of Camden for six years before joining Welwyn Hatfield in 1987.
