Abstract
This article was originally conceived as part of a joint endeavour with H.G. Jones on the subject of “Starting OR groups”. H.G.'s contribution has already appeared in OR Insight Vol. 4 No. 4, and I hope this article follows on naturally from what he has said. It may emphasise the relationship between the papers if I add here that during most of my time starting up the OR Group at Clydebridge Steelworks, I had the benefit of H.G. being lodged in the same office block. He never interfered, but was always available to advise. I sometimes feel like the Sorcerer's Apprentice with respect to him. If it shows, I am proud of it.
