Investigation of English Verb Properties by Means of the Correlation Analysis Method

Pages 117-127 | Published online: 09 Aug 2010

Abstract

In this article, an attempt was made to reveal and study some specific features and properties of the English verb by applying the correlation analysis method to the investigation which was carried out on the morphological, syntactic and semantic levels of the language. Application of this method makes it possible to reveal statistically significant correlations, if there are any, between qualitative dichotomous features or properties of the verb and to receive their explicit quantitative evaluations. Thus, you obtain an instrument allowing you to verify some of your scientific hypotheses and to prognosticate mutual occurrences of some of the verb’s specific features in certain linguistic situations.
