The Evolution of the Concept of Controllability

Pages 397-406 | Published online: 09 Aug 2010

Abstract

This paper traces the evolution of the central concept of controllability of state space systems introduced by Kalman to its behavioural generalisation byWillems, and beyond to distributed behaviours. It turns out that controllability in this new formalism is identical to the notion of a potential in physics or of exactness in mathematics.
