Control of Marek's Disease by Vaccination

Pages 238-250 | Published online: 23 Sep 2019

SUMMARY

There are three types of vaccines presently available for the control of Marek's disease (MD), namely the apathogenic MD viruses that spread horizonatlly, the altered viruses that do not spread and the herpesvirus of turkeys. The property of horizontal spread has its advantages and disadvantages.

In choosing a vaccine one must consider the origin of the virus, the efficiency of the vaccine, whether or not it spreads horizontally and whether to use attenuated or natural viruses in cell-associated or cell-free form.

Among the many advantages to vaccination are a decrease in mortality from MD and other causes, an increased body weight and egg production. To date no MD viruses have been isolated which will “break through” the protection conferred by these vaccines.
