Salmonellas In Poultry Feeds—A Worldwide Review

Summary

During the past 20 years a vast amount of literature has considered the problem of salmonellas in poultry feeds. This review, an annotated bibliography of 229 references, brings recent findings and observations of almost 360 research workers together in a single text for a better understanding and appreciation of the present state of knowledge of the subject. A very careful selection has been made from the available literature.

This review has been organized with the aim of covering all important references pertaining to the incidence, distribution, and sources of the salmonella organisms in poultry feeds; methods in the isolation and identification of the organisms; and methods in their control and elimination. With the widespread distribution of salmonella organisms in poultry feeds it is currently difficult to try to control the disease. Active programmes aimed at eliminating the organisms need to be undertaken immediately.

Durant les 20 dernières années une grande quatité de litérature a apparue concernant l'incidence des salmonellae dans les aliments pour volailles. Cette revue, qui est une bibliographie annotée de 229 références, soumet les récents travaux et observations de presque 360 spécialistes, ensemble dans un seul text pour une meilleure appréciacion de notre connaissance courante sur ce sujet. Une sélection très attentive a été faite basée sur la literature à notre disposition.

Cette revue a été organisée en un effort pour couvrir toutes références pertimentes en relation à l'incidence, la distribution, les sources de salmonellae dans les aliments pour volailles, la méthodologie pour leur isolement et leur identification et la méthodologie employée pour leur control et leur élimination.

Avec la large distribution de salmonellae dans les aliments pour volailles, il est actuellement impossible de contrôler la maladie. Des programmes vigoureux destinés à éliminer ces bacteries doivent être mis en force immédiatement.

Zusammenfassung

Die Literatur der vergangenen 20 Jahre umfasst eine riesige Anzahl von Arbeiten über das Vorkommen von Salmonellen in Geflügelfutter. Diese Übersicht ist eine mit Anmerkungen versehene Arbeit der einschlägigen Literature welche 229 Hinweise enthält un neue Ergebnisse und Beobachtungen von fast 360 Wissentschaftlern in einem Einzeltext zusammenfast mit den Zweck eines besseren Verständnisses und Würdigung der gegenwärtigen Kenntnisse in diesem Arbeitsgebiet. Eine sehr vorsichtige Auswahl der gegenwärtig vorhandenen Literatur wurde unternommen.

Diese Übersicht wurde zusammengefasst in einem Versuch alle zutreffenden Literaturangaben einzuschliessen die über das Vorkommen, Verteilung und Ursprung der Salmonellen in Geflügelfutter, die Methodik der Isolierung und Identifizierung des Erregers sowie die Methodik ihrer Kontrolle und Eliminierung Aufschluss geben. Durch die weitverbreitete Ausdehnung der Salmonellen in Geflügelfutter ist es gegenwärtig unmöglich die Krankheit zu kontrollieren. Wirksame Massnahmen mit dem Ziel der Eliminierung der Erreger sind notwendig und sollten unverzüglich getroffen werden.
