Fundamental Principles of Broiler Breeders Nutrition and the Design of Feeding Programmes

Summary

The design of feeding programmes for broiler breeders and the fundamental principles on which they should be based are discussed with emphasis on the practical aspects under field conditions. Feed restriction is deemed to be essential from a relatively early age if the performance of the modern broiler breeder is to reach the potential of which it is capable. Control of the growth rate can only be achieved, without undesirable consequences, if feeding programmes are carefully planned and efficiently and intelligently applied throughout the rearing and laying periods. Three points are considered vital to the economic success of a flock.

1)	the body weight at point-of-lay and the manipulation of the rate of growth in order to reach it without impairing flock uniformity.
2)	the synchronization of growth and sexual maturity and
3)	accurate feeding at Start of production and during the peak period. Feeding programmes and management procedures are suggested to enable breeding flocks to perform their maximum potential. The advice is presented in a practical manner to serve as a guide to poultry advisers and managers of broiler breeding flocks in particular.

L'élaboration des programme d'alimentation pour les reproducteurs des souches de poulets de chair, et les principes fondamentaux sur lesquels caux-ci sont fondés, sont discutés, en insistant sur les aspects pratiques rencontrés sur le terrain.

La restriction alimentaire est considérée comme essentielle à partir d'un âge relativement précoce si l'on veut que les performances des reproducteurs de souches “chair” modernes atteignent le potentiel maximum dont caux-ci sont capables. Le contrôle du taux de croissance ne peut être obtenu sans conséquences indésirables que si les programmes d'alimentation sont planifiés avec soin et appliqués avec efficacité et intelligence pendant toute la période de croissance et celle de ponte. Trois points sont considérés comme vitaux pour le succès économique d'un troupeau:

1.	Le poids corporel moyen à l'entrée en ponte et la manipulation du taux de croissance destinée à atteindre ce poids sans porter atteinte à l'uniformité du troupeau;
2.	la synchronisation de la croissance et de la maturité sexuelle;
3.	un rationnement précis en début de ponte et pendant le période du maximum de production.

Le programme d'alimentation et les procédures d'élevage devraient permettre aux troupeaux reproducteurs de donner leur potentiel maximum. Les conseils sont présentés d'une manière pratique pour servir de guides en particulier aux conseillers avicoles et aux responsables de troupeaux de reproduction “chair”.

Zusammenfassung

Die Entwicklung von Futterprogrammen für Mastelterntiere und die wichtigsten Grundsätze, die dabei berücksichtigt werden sollten, werden in Hinblick auf praktische Gesichtspunkte unter Feldbedingungen diskutiert. Futterrestriktion von einem relativ frühen Alter an ist wesentlich, wenn die modernen Mastelterntiere die Leistungen erreichen sollen, deren sie fähig sind. Die Kontrolle des Wachstums läßt sich ohne unerwünschte Nebenwirkungen nur erzielen, wenn Futterprogramme sorgfältig geplant und konsequent während der Aufzucht und Legeperiode angewandt werden. Drei Gesichtspunkte werden als besonders wichtig für den wirtschaftlichen Erfolg einer Herde betrachtet:

1.	Das Körpergewicht bei Legebeginn und die Beeinflussung der Wachstumsrate in Hinblick darauf, dies Gewicht ohne Gefährdung der Einheitlichkeit der Herde zu erreichen
2.	Die Synchronisation von Wachstum und Geschlechtsreife
3.	Sorgfältige Futterversorgung zu Beginn der Legeleistung und während der Legespitze.

Futterprogramme und managementmaßnahmen werden empfohlen, die das Leistungspotential von Zuchtherden voll zur Entfaltung bringen. Die Vorschläge sind so formuliert, daß sie den Geflügelberatern und insbesondere den Betreuern von Mastelterntierherden als Anleitung dienen können.
