Control of Infectious Diseases in Large-Scale Poultry Breeding and Production

Summary

General preventive measures aimed at the control of infectious diseases in intensive poultry breeding must include the isolation of farms and the prevention of introduction of pathogens in feedstuffs, litter and stock originating from other farms. In order to ensure appropriate protection against potentially pathogenic microorganisms a high-level resistance must be maintained in all stock. The use of vaccines and carefully planned immunization programmes play a major part in reducing the economic loss from some infectious diseases.

Vaccination procedures for the control of the following diseases are discussed in some detail: Marek's disease, Newcastle disease, infectious bronchitis, infectious bursal disease, laryngotracheitis, fowlpox, avian encephalomyelitis, duck hepatitis, duck plague, Derzsy's disease and fowl cholera.

It is emphasized that effective control of infectious diseases of poultry can only be achieved with the active co-operation of all those involved in the husbandry, management and production of poultry throughout the industry.

Les mesures préventives générales visant au contrôle des maladies infectieuses en sélection avicole intensive doivent inclure l'isolement des fermes et la lutte contre l'introduction d'agents pathogènes par les aliments, les litières ou des animaux provenant d'autres fermes. Pour assurer une protection convenable contre les microorganismes potentiellement pathogènes un haut niveau de résistance doit être maintenu dans l'ensemble du stock. L'emploi de vaccins et de programmes d'immunisation convenablement planifiés joue un rôle essentiel dans la réduction des pertes économiques dues aux maladies infectieuses.

Les procédures de vaccination sont discutées avec quelque détail pour le contrôle des maladies suivantes: Marek, Newcastle, bronchite infectieuse, maladie infectieuse de la bourse, laryngotrachéite, variole, encéphalomyélite aviaire, hépatite du carnard, peste du carnard, maladie de Derzsy et choléra aviaire.

L'accent est mis sur le fait que le contrôle effectif des maladies infectieuses chez les volailles ne peut être atteint qu'avec la coopération de toutes les personnes impliquées dans l'élevage et la production à tous les stades de l'Industrie.

Die allgemeinen Vorbeugungsmaßnahmen zur Kontrolle infektiöser Krankheiten in der intensiven Geflügelzucht müssen die Isolierung von Betrieben und die Verhinderung der Einschleppung von Krankheitserregern in Futtermitteln, Einstreu und Tiermaterial aus anderen Farmen einschließen. Um einen ausreichenden Schutz gegen potentiell pathogene Mikroorganismen zu gewährleisten, muß eine hochwirksame Resistenz in allen Beständen erhalten werden. Der Anwendung von Impfstoffen und der sorgfältigen Planung von Impfprogrammen kommt eine große Bedeutung für die Verringerung der wirtschaftlichen Verluste durch infektiöse Krankheiten zu.

Impfmaßnahmen für die Kontrolle der wichtigsten Krankheiten beim Geflügel und bei Enten wie Marek, Newcastle, infektiöse Bronchitis, Gumboro usw. werden ausführlich diskutiert.

Es wird besonders herausgestellt, daß eine wirksame Kontrolle infektiöser Krankheiten des Geflügels nur zu erzielen ist bei einer aktiven Zusammenarbeit aller an der Haltung, Betreuung und Erzeugung in der Geflügel industrie Beteiligten.
