Peat Accumulation in Steep Hills at Alkhornet, Spitsbergen

Pages 217-219 | Received 07 Feb 1990, Published online: 03 Sep 2009

Abstract

A new occurrence of very steep peatland has been discovered in Spitsbergen. At Alkhornet, close to the mouth of Isfjorden, a peat cover sloping about 45° (1:1) has been found. The local climate is favourable and droppings from birds supply extra nutrients. Ratio of C: N in the peat is calculated to 22–32.
