Dr Hughes is the principal investigator, Professor Coombes the co-investigator and Professor Karega-Munene the lead consultant on this research project funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council of the UK (AHRC 2008–11). The British Academy funded a UK-Africa Partnership Scheme element of the research, carried out by Hughes and Karega-Munene. Dr Bohlin and Dr Carrier, contributors to this Special Issue, also contributed to the AHRC project, as desk-based and field-based consultants respectively.
