Abstract

The optimum feeding proportion of methane and oxygen for cultivation of Methylomonas flagellata was defined in batch cultures. The highest productivity was obtained by feeding equi-volumes of methane and oxygen (CH4 17%+air 83%). In this condition, the dissolved methane and oxygen were found to be simultaneous growth limiting factors with elevation of cell density. M. flagellata showed a specific growth rate of 0.19 hr−1 under this optimal condition, and cell density reached 23 g/liter after 72 hr cultivation.
