Abstract
A virus disease of the American elm tree has become prevalent throughout most of the nation. The air pollution aspects included are those involved in open burning and landfill disposal methods. The Air Pollution Unit of the Nassau County Department of Health recently undertook a survey of the various stale agencies having jurisdiction over the disposal of diseased trees. A tabulation of the survey is presented. A description of the disease, commonly known as “Dutch” elm tree disease is also included. The abatement aspects of the various disposal practices now in use are also discussed. Conclusions are drawn relative to the common disposal methods as well as those used to reduce air contamination from this source.
