Collaborative Testing of Methods to Measure Air Pollutants

I. The High-Volume Method for Suspended Particulate Matter

Abstract

A collaborative testing program has been undertaken to provide reliable data on the accuracy and reproducibility of various methods for measuring atmospheric contaminants. This program is part of a larger effort leading to the adoption of standard methods for both ambient air and source measurements. The first test evaluated the high-volume method for measuring total particulate matter. This test was conducted on-site, where the collaborators sampled a real atmosphère, rather than one generated in the laboratory, because a “standard-particulate atmosphere” was not available. The test involved 12 collaborators and 4 different 24-hr samples. A statistical analysis of the data obtained produced the following results:
