Abstract
Several techniques are discussed for determining the outdoor noise environments of communities. Data are presented to illustrate the kinds of errors that can be incurred by making very brief outdoor noise measurements (i.e., observations of 1 hour or less) and assuming that the results of such brief observations are representative of longer time periods. Additional data are presented to illustrate the effects of seasonal and weather variations on outdoor sound environments. It is concluded that suitable measurement equipment and further research are required to increase our understanding of long-term variations in the noise environment.
