Abstract
This essay reconsiders validity as the “soundness” of a rhetorical argument. Characteristics of rhetorical argument which contribute to this reconsideration are examined: the complicity of an audience, the probable relationship between argument and judgment, and the normative force of knowledge presumed and created by rhetorical argument.
