A Reformulation of the Concept of Argument: The Constructivist/Interactionist Foundations of a Sociology of Argument

Charles Arthur Willard Mr. Willard is Assistant Professor of Speech, Dartmouth College. An earlier version of this essay was presented at the Speech Communication Association convention in, December of 1975. The author thanks Joseph W. Wenzel, Daniel J. O'Keefe, Robert L. Abstract

The traditional view of argument, based upon the positivistic assumption that argument is a “thing” experienced alike by all persons, is criticized, and an alternative view, grounded in constructivism (personal construct theory) and symbolic interactionism is outlined.
