Toward a Contemporary Linguistic Interpretation of the Concept of Stasis

Abstract

The classical doctrine of stasis is useful in understanding everyday discourse if seen as implicit in the very structure of communication. The analysis uses the work of speech act theorists and Jürgen Habermas to demonstrate that there exist within the structure of any communicative event points of stasis that can render that event problematic for its interactants.
