On the Foundations of Rationality: Toulmin, Habermas, and the a Priori of Reason

Pages 112-127 | Published online: 23 Jan 2018

Abstract

This essay critically analyzes the theories of rationality presented by two contemporary philosophers, Stephen Toulmin and Jürgen Habermas. While Toulmin's theory inadequately grounds its rational principles, Habermas' theory—an outgrowth of his analysis of communication—furnishes such grounding. Additional points of integration and complementary strengths of the two theories are discussed.
