Abstract
A pre-operational Environmental Survey for the Enrico Fermi Atomic Power Plant was begun in April, 1958, and has continued to the present time. Data are presented for the spectrometer analysis of air samples showing the fraction of the total activity that can be identified with the gamma-ray spectrometer. The observed variations in radioactivity with time and sampling location are discussed and the gross beta radioactivity concentrations in airborne dust at two Southeastern Michigan locations are shown. Observed relationships between the average radioactivity concentrations and the variations from the average are discussed. All the media sampled during the survey are evaluated in terms of certain stated criteria. Conclusions are drawn regarding general survey methodology, sample media and the usefulness of the pre-operational survey.
