Human Respiratory and Ocular Irritation Studies Utilizing o-Chlorobenzylidene Malononitrile Aerosol Effect of Particle Size

Abstract

Studies have been made with humans to determine the influence of one and sixty micron aerosols of o-chlorobenzylidene malononitrile on respiratory and ocular irritating effects. Small particles rapidly produce respiratory and ocular irritation. Only 3 of 17 individuals could tolerate small particles for as long as 60 seconds. Large particles predominately produce ocular irritation. Of 18 subjects exposed, 15 were able to tolerate the cloud for at least 60 seconds. Large particles increase recovery time from ocular irritation.
