Discussion of Proposed Changes in Standards for Hearing Testing Instruments

Pages 334-343 | Published online: 27 Dec 2007

Abstract

The American Standards Association currently is considering revising specifications for audiometers used for testing hearing. The proposed Standard incorporates the hearing threshold reference levels recommended by the International Organization for Standardization instead of the American Standard normal threshold, or zero hearing loss, currently used. This article discusses a number of practical problems which adoption and application of the proposed new standard would present in relation to the technical advantages to be gained.
