Abstract
A technique for size determination of acid aerosol droplets by use of vacuum-evaporated metal films is described. The films, ranging from 0.2 to 0.6 micron thick, develop reaction spots on exposure to acid aerosols. Films were used in several size-classifying collection devices to detect and size laboratory-generated acid aerosols. Evaluation of the reaction spots was by light or electron microscopy. Preliminary results of atmospheric sampling with iron films in the Goetz aerosol spectrometer are presented. Extension of the method for detection and sizing of acid droplets with diameters less than 0.1 micron by electron microscopy is described. Requirements for increasing resolution to permit the detection and size analysis of acid aerosols with diameters of 0.01 micron are discussed.
