Abstract
A new electro-optical instrument for detecting and counting of airborne dust particles is described. The instrument operates by measuring the light scattered from individual particles passing within a continuous air sample flow through the “view-volume” of an optical system. The design of the optics makes the size detection relatively independent of particle shape or material properties. Particles from 0.3 micron to over 10 microns can be detected and sized. The instrument is capable of monitoring concentrations to 106 particles per cubic foot. Performance and experimental data are provided.
