Estimation of Atmospheric Concentrations of Volatile Compounds from Surface Coatings by Means of a Laboratory Model

Pages 450-455 | Received 24 Apr 1968, Published online: 27 Dec 2007

Abstract

In response to questions concerning the hazard from the use of a particular protective coating in a given situation, or the relative hazard of two alternative formulations, we have developed a small laboratory model which provides consistent information from which estimates of exposure can be made. The model, a 1-foot cube, is designed to simulate a small (1,000-cubic-foot) room with moderate (6 air changes per hour) ventilation. It is simple to construct, and all the auxiliary equipment—pumps, flowmeters, samplers, etc.—is standard equipment available in any industrial hygiene laboratory. The physical principles and dynamic characteristics of the model are illustrated. In addition, a few examples of its application to practical problems are presented.
