The Douglas Point Air-Supplied Vault Suit

Pages 605-610 | Received 20 May 1968, Published online: 27 Dec 2007

Abstract

A requirement arose at the Douglas Point Nuclear Power Station for a protective suit which would permit inspection or maintenance work into a CO2 atmosphere containing a high concentration of tritium and having high temperatures. Existing plastic clothing, while generally adequate for tritium, did not provide sufficient protection against the CO2 hazard and did not provide a comfortable environment for detailed work. The suit consists of an inner cotton coverall and an outer plastic suit. It is air-cooled to permit work at temperatures up to 120°F and has a protective helmet containing a telephone communication system. An emergency air supply is provided.
