A Field Instrument for Detecting Airborne Halogen Compounds

Pages 757-765 | Published online: 04 Jun 2010

Abstract

A field instrument for continuously measuring the concentration of halogenated compounds has been developed. The principle of operation is based on the spark spectral increase which occurs in the presence of a halogen. The degree of spectral enhancement depends on the concentration of halogenated material present. The instrument can be zeroed in a contaminated atmosphere and has a detection limit of several parts per million for most chlorinated materials. This lightweight (13-pound) ac-powered instrument has a 50-mv recorder output, a choice of four ranges, and a full-scale response time of 3 to 5 seconds.
