Abstract

A self-contained personal, sampler has been developed to monitor firefighters’ exposure to both carbon monoxide and oxygen in actual fires. A combustible gas detector was modified to be specific for carbon monoxide measurements in the range of 0.02 to 10.0%. A membrane sensor is used to measure oxygen in the range of 0 to 21%; the data are recorded on a small cassette tape recorder with a voltage-to-frequency converter. Tests on actual fire gases indicate mean errors of 14.0% and 3.2% in the carbon monoxide and oyxgen measurements, respectively.
