Joseph A. Gallian
JOE GALLIAN received a B.A. degree from Slippery Rock State University in 1966 and Ph.D. from Notre Dame in 1971. He has been at the University of Minnesota Duluth since 1972, where he is a University Distinguished Professor of Teaching. He serves on the editorial board of this Monthly and Math Horizons and served one term on the editorial board of Mathematics Magazine. He has received the MAA's Haimo Award for Distinguished Teaching, and the MAA's Allendoerfer and Evans awards for exposition. He is a codirector of Project NExT and has been an MAA Polya Lecturer and a Second Vice President of the MAA. In 2003 he was named Minnesota Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Since 1977 he has run a summer undergraduate research program that has had a total of 118 participants through 2003. He has had the good fortune to work with twenty-two Putnam Fellows in his summer programs.
