Abstract

The probability that a field goal attempt will be successful is estimated. The estimate depends on the yardages of the kicker's previous successful and unsuccessful attempts. The estimate involves modeling accuracy and distance. Methods for ranking kickers based on this estimate are proposed. National Football League kickers are ranked on the basis of their 1983 regular season records.
