Expect the Unexpected from Conditional Expectation

Abstract

Conditioning arguments are often used in statistics. Unfortunately, many of them are incorrect. We show that seemingly logical reasoning can lead to erroneous conclusions because of lack of rigor in dealing with conditional distributions and expectations.
