Abstract

The response of single crystal and precipitate lead sensitive chalcogenide electrodes (PbS, PbSe, PbTe) in lead ion buffer solutions was studied. It was found that the sensitivity toward Pb decreased in the order PbS∼PbSe > PbTe, while the pH sensitivity follows the reverse order: PbS<PbSe» PbTe. Ag2S present in the electrode affects the behavior of the electrode and causes a sharp decrease in the electrode sensitivity when present in a concentration greater than 90% wt. The chalcogenide electrodes are not very advantageous as direct potentiometric sensors but they can be used advantageously in precipitation and complexometric titrations of lead.
