Abstract

A generalized but still rather compact theoretical description of the potentiometric response behavior of membranes that contain any number of electrically neutral ionophores and electrically charged ligands or ion-exchange sites is presented. the discussion of the limiting cases exemplifies that the pronounced high ion selecrivities observed for several ion sensors are favored by the fortuitous coincidence of special boundary conditions fulfilled for such systems.
