Abstract

A rapid, specific and accurate HPLC assay procedure for measuring methyl, ethyl, propyl and butyl esters of p-hydroxybenzoic acid in different pharmaceutical formulations was developed. This highly specific technique allowed simultaneous determination of these parabens either singly or in combination in different pharmaceutical dosage forms. The examined parabens were eluted from a 6.5 μ C-18 RPP column at ambient temperature with a mobile phase (pH 5.5) composed of acetonitrile: 6.5 mM Na H2 PO4 (40:60) with uv detection at 230 nm. The analysis time was 7.0 min for each run. Quantitative determination was achieved by measurement of the peak height ratio of each paraben to the internal standard.
