Abstract

A rapid TLC-scanning method is described for the qualitative and quantitative determination of papaverine either as raw material, in certain dosage forms; poppy capsules and opium. Papaverine is separated from other constituents on precoated silica gel G plates using toluene - ethyl acetate - methanol (70:20:10). The spots were measured in situ using spectrodensitometer at 238 nm. The results obtained were precise and reproducible and the mean recovery of determination was 99.2 + 1.09. The proposed method is more convenient, rapid and is accepted in modern analytical laboratory.
