Abstract

A rapid high -performance liquid chromatographic method for the determination of carbamazepine in both plasma and saliva is described. A deproteinization but no extraction step is involved, simplifying the assay. The chromatographic system consists of a reversed-phase C18-Spherisorb column with acetonitrile/0.1 M sodium acetate (40:60 v/v, pH 6.9) as the mobile phase. The method can accurately measure concentrations down to 0.02 μg.ml−1 using 0.5 ml sample and covers the entire concentration range normally encountered during therapy. The total run time is under 6 min and the typical assay time is less than 15 min.
