Abstract

A very simple method has been developed for the separation of molybdenum(VI) with poly-(dibenzo-18-crown-5) from hydrobromic acid medium using column chromatographic technique. The adsorption of molybdenum(VI) was quantitative from 5.5–8.0 M HBr. The capacity of poly-(dibenzo-18-crown-6) for Mo(VI) was found to be 10.423 m.mole/g. of crown polymer. Amongst various eluents, 0.1–8.0 M NH4OH, 0.1–4.5 M HCIO4 and 2.0–7.0 M H2SO4 were found to be efficient eluents for Mo(VI). The separation of Mo(VI) was achieved from a number of elements in binary mixtures. Most of the elements showed higher tolerance limit. The separation of Mo(VI) was also achieved from a number of elements such as Fe(III), Ba, V(V), Cr(III), Mn(II), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II) etc. in multicomponent mixtures. The method was extended to the analysis of molybdenum in a number of alloy samples. The method is very simple, rapid, selective and reproducible. The recovery of Mo(VI) in all instances from duplicate determination is 100 ± 2%. The reproducibility of the procedure is ± 2%.
