Abstract

This paper reports the development of a new microassay for phospholipase A2 (PL A2) [EC 3.1.1.4] using the phenyl valerate carboxylesterases (PVCases) of chick embryo brain as a marker for PL A2 catalytic activity. The activity of PVCases released from brain membrane fragments (BMF) by PL A2 was determined spectrophotometrically by measuring the phenol formed from phenyl valerate hydrolysis with potassium ferricyanide and 4-aminoantipyrine. The enzymes most active on chicken embryonic BMP were PL A2 of Naja and bee venoms.
