The genesis of the académie des sciences

Pages 372-401 | Published online: 02 Jun 2006

I wish to express my gratitude to Professor Harcourt Brown, chairman of the department of Romance Languages, Brown University, for his kind assistance. The subject was recommended by him, and some of the material used herein comes from his files. The founding of the Académie des Sciences is not discussed in his Scientific Organizations in Seventeenth Century France (Baltimore, 1934), although he offers some account of the steps taken in 1663–5 which led to it. These are recapitulated here.
