The research described in this and following papers was carried out in the Department of the History and Philosophy of Science, University College, London. It is based on printed versions of these reports as a first attempt on this large and varied problem in the expectation that it may prove useful to others with time and opportunity to examine the documentary and manuscript sources in the Archives of the Académie des Sciences and elsewhere.
