Transmutation and separation of variables

Pages 253-263 | Received 25 Apr 1978, Published online: 02 May 2007

Abstract

A formalism is developed showing how transmutation operators are characterized in terms of eigenfunction transforms. This leads to information about transforms via transmutation theorems and vice versa. The formalism is illustrated through various examples and is useful in the study of concrete partial differential equations, operational calculus, and abstract “related” differential equations.
