A nonparametric test for economies of scope

Abstract

This paper presents a simple test for economies of scope using nonparametric methods rather than elaborate estimation techniques. The test reveals that nonporfit hospitals diversified into psychiatric services realize neither economies nor diseconomies of scope. The test may be useful for policy markers concerned about whether diversification activities by certain groups of firms enhance efficiency or produce anticompetitive effects.
