Pages 71-80 | Published online: 10 Oct 2011

Abstract

Turkey is located on an earthquake risk belt, and devastating earthquakes have taken place in the 20th century. After every earthquake, reports and articles have been published regarding the reasons for damage to buildings. This information paper reviews the reasons for earthquake damage in reinforced concrete buildings in Turkey. One of the main causes of this damage is the lack of enforcement of the earthquake provisions as well as lack of awareness and education of some architects and related professionals in the design, construction and supervision processes.
